Alone
For over a hundred thousand years, humans looked up in the sky and wondered if there is anybody out there. There isn’t. The space agency seems to have come out empty, in spite of their arrogant assertions that ET would be found by 2020. They will not be.
There are many reasons for this. (1) If the standard model holds, the space-time constraints are so daunting that finding intelligence within the afforded cone is infinitesimally small. (2) Humans suffer from self-centrism. They seek water and carbon-based life. The space scientists have been focused on the “habitable zone,” as if it is defined mathematically. It isn’t. (3) There is no reason to believe life is special. Most take this as proof that the universe is teeming with it. The other interpretation is that life is a freak accident. If so, it is unlikely to be prevalent. (4) Finally, a system that renews every million years, by external effects and possibly by internal actions, is not tremendously interesting. So, if intelligent life does exist elsewhere, they are unlikely to make contact.
Humans, alone and awaiting a disastrous meteor strike to put them out of their misery, are not special.
