Edge of Civilization

At the edge of civilization

Beyond yesterday’s wars and tomorrow’s pandemics

I stood gazing at the myths and mysteries

I was overrun by ignorance

.

Traveling in space and time

Thoughtless, emotionless and paralyzed

I could only look back but not feel

I was overrun by ignorance

.

There were signs but they were not flashy

There were noises but they were not comprehensible

There were equations but they did not explain

I was overrun by ignorance

.

I erected crumbling edifices and egos

I surfed on passing waves and fads

I marketed wares and filled warehouses

I was overrun by ignorance

.

I searched for my mind, but it was lost in the shuffle

I sought unattainable knowledge as if it was possible

Those who passed laughed, and the rest left to cry

I was overrun by ignorance

.

Dreams were fleeting, I was slipping through the cracks

I heard the time tick and tick again

I wanted to piece history together and travel to the future

I was overrun by ignorance

.

Some said they figured it out and others marveled at it

Some did what they could, and others abandoned them

Some survived and others thrived

I was overrun by ignorance

.

As thoughts were left to perish in a sea of the unknowns

As ideas were shot down by those lacking ideas

As they perished without holding hands

I was overrun by ignorance

.

As science and religion clashed at the altar of academic cathedrals

As confused atheists called themselves agnostics

As the religious paraded their ethics and scientists their knowledge

I was overrun by ignorance

.

Where are the humans as humanity crumbles?

Where are the fully protected intelligentsia as the rest are exposed?

Where are the politicians and those who want to save the universe?

Are they overrun by ignorance or is it just me?
