Human reset
--
Humans, a newcomer to the blue planet, have undergone many resets during their short stay of fewer than 300K years. Just a mere 70K years ago, they were almost wiped out, save a few thousand samples (1). In the last couple of centuries, floods, earthquakes, and typhoons have been able to eliminate millions instantly. Pathogen related diseases have been a constant force in restricting the population from the inception of humans. Not sufficiently impressed by nature’s fury, they often turned on themselves, destroying a sizable share of themselves. And, of course, maniacs, narcissists, and paranoids in power have been responsible for unthinkable genocides.
Humans appear to be programmed for regular resets either by external forces or from self-inflicted violence. The human system appears to seek disorder driven reset at regular intervals. The solar system itself is designed for a hard reset within a few 10s of millions of years by catastrophic impact events or radiation bursts. Some cosmologists have argued that the universe is a simulation and the high predictability of system-wide resets may provide credence to such a theory.
Is the predictable reset a curse that arrests progress beyond a threshold?
